about

So why write a protest song about a sports writer. I mean as we speak we are bombing another country, again, people's civil rights are being trampled on because of race and sexual orientation and you can list probably ten more things that in the grand scheme of things are more important to get your dander up about. Here's the thing, this is not supposed to be important. An opinion writer is supposed to have opinions, he is supposed to say exactly what he thinks. It is the definition of what an opinion writer does.

As is the case the problem isn't that what Mr. Simmons said was untrue. The problem is of course that he hit too close to the mark and for that he was suspended longer than someone who made misogynistic remarks. Does anyone really believe Revenue Roger didn't see this tape, especially when the police, let me say this again, the police contradict the story. Does a man who suspended another man for a year claiming ignorance is no excuse get to plead ignorance? Can that man be trusted to investigate himself?

The reason why this is important is that it points to a bigger issue with our culture at large right now. A culture where actual misdeeds are somehow less egregious than calling out the big name players. It is a time where big business only sems to do the right thing if they are going to get caught. A time where dollars seems to make all the sense and if you have enough of them you make up your own rules. A time without money for schools but always enough for bombs. A . It is a time when those who are given more power are not held to a higher standard and to upholding the greater responsibility with which they have been entrusted.

For me this simple suspension of an opinion writer has become a symbol of the age we live in. An age that no doubt future generations will look back on and wonder how did things become so corrupt. That statement while on the surface seems pessimistic is in fact very optimistic. It presupposes that we will do what is necessary and glean out the lying minority, the few spinning yarns like man made climate change is still up for debate or that giving tax cuts to the wealthiest somehow leads to prosperity for all or that by perpetually being at war we will someday lead to peace. Yep, it's just time to call it how it is. It is time to call liars, well, liars.

So good on you Mr. Simmons. You suck at picking football games but hey that's not you are paid to to do. You're paid to have an opinion and take shots at the big dogs. Keep on doing it.

lyrics

In a time filled with madness
A world filled with lies
Where leaders of industry
Are easily despised
When even the jobs
where you're supposed to speak true
Those up above you
Say you mustn't do

Oh no what should we do, will the hero of Grantland please see us through

The case set before us
Is particulary vile
Where men of the league
Beat women and child
But what's even worse
Is those in the know
With the power to change things
Just let it go

Oh no what should we do, will the hero of Grantland please see us through

Now everythings fine
As long as we're blind
Bury the evidence
Where no one can find
But alas thing hidden
See light of the day
And here sits a leader
With nothing to say

Oh no what should we do, will the hero of Grantland please see us through

Ignorance he claims
and with that a sting
For he'd punished a man
For the very same thing
As he feigns to the public
I ne'er seen the crime
The police contradict him
At the very same time

Oh no what should we do, will the hero of Grantland please see us through

Now the people whose job
Is to call this man out
Most of them whimper
Very few shout
When one finally does
Steps out of the line
They tell him go home
For at least 3 weeks time

Oh no what should we do, will the hero of Grantland please see us through

It was a time full of madness
A time full of lies
Where the leader's of industry
are easily despised
When calling out liars
Becomes an offense
We stand together
Rise to his defense.

Oh no what should we do, will the hero of Grantland please see us through
Oh no what should we do, will the hero of Grantland please see us through
